This food packaging redesign is meticulously crafted around the dual themes of construction/deconstruction and sustainability, marking a new chapter in culinary aesthetics.
The design process begins with deconstruction, where we carefully dismantle conventional packaging norms. This thoughtful disassembly allows us to scrutinize every element, ensuring that each component serves a purpose in enhancing the sushi experience. Through this process, we pave the way for construction – a synthesis of form and function that goes beyond aesthetics to prioritize sustainability.
Innovative materials, chosen with a keen eye on environmental impact, form the building blocks of this redesigned packaging.
Here, I began brainstorming my ideas. I wanted each component to work harmoniously together, while leaving little to no waste. That's when I came up with the idea of constructing a packaging that mimics the natural, raw, form of a sushi roll before it is cut.
2D template of my packaging design. The main beige area was set to be a label printed with recycled/rice paper. The top deep green portion, out of seaweed. Fresh foods like sushi are not meant to be stored or preserved for very long, therefore it made sense to eliminate any plastics.
